West Virginia was built on the back of coal. From their communities, to their workforce, to their downtowns, every single element of WV was once connected to the coal companies. But as coal has diminished and the jobs that used to keep their economy thriving went away, it’s left a big part of the state, particularly the Southern part, scrambling to find what’s next. Today my friend Jake Frye and I go on site throughout multiple coal counties in WV, and investigate firsthand what happens when coal companies leave, and leave behind a mess for the community to clean up.
